Since 2017, as a designated “Tree City USA”, Prairie Village and the Prairie Village Tree Board holds an annual Street Tree Planting Event during the fall to promote the value of trees in our community.
With the assistance of the Heartland Tree Alliance (http://bridgingthegap.org/heartland-tree-alliance/) or other community outreach organizations, volunteers plant typically 20-25 trees throughout various areas within Prairie Village.
A diverse range of tree species are planted in the city right-of-way with personal commitments gained from each homeowner to water & care for the trees over two-year, critical growing period.
Proven studies have shown that trees provide numerous benefits to the community, including reductions in particulate matter concentrations, ambient air temperatures, & crime, and improved health and psychological benefits. As well stated by The Nature Conservancy, “TREES (the right tree in the right spot) can help make our air healthier and our cities more verdant and livable.”

The Prairie Village Tree Board and Parks & Recreation Committee have teamed up to create an arboretum in each of the City's parks.
Using the City's existing park system, land and trees, an arboretum will be established in each of the City's parks. The mission of the arboretum will be to "enhance the cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities for the community within the Parks System, while increasing opportunities for participation and volunteerism".
Through the Friends of the Prairie Village Arboretum residents may contribute to the development and expansion of the arboretum by making a tax-deductible donation to the program through the Prairie Village Foundation. Donations may be for general support of the arboretum, or for specific uses such as planting memorial trees to honor specific individuals or organizations and their contributions to the community.

Prairie Village has adopted a Tree Ordinance, effective June 1, 2021. The intent is to preserve the city’s existing tree canopy and streetscape for aesthetic, economic and environmental benefits.
The ordinance classifies trees to be protected in four categories, based primarily on their location on city streets and on private lots. Those classifications include all right-of-way trees — that is, trees that are in public right-of-ways, typically between a sidewalk and a street; frontage trees; lot trees; and buildable area trees. For more information, you can review the entire ordinance.

Arborists are professionals that specialize in the management and care of individual trees. It is encouraged to use certified arborists who have demonstrated competency and ethical and technical attributes for tree care. Certified arborists in Kansas have completed training, passed a certification exam, and possess a minimum of two years of practical experience applying sound and proper arboricultural practices. See the “Need an Arborist” article in the January/February 2021 Village Voice.
You can obtain a list of certified arborists from the Kansas Arborists Association: https://www.kansasarborist.com and the International Society of Arboriculture: https://www.isa-arbor.com/For-the-Public.

More than 3,400 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA. Prairie Village is proud to have achieved Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

Bridget Tolle is Prairie Village's Urban Forestry Specialist and graduated from Columbia College with a B.S. in Environmental Science. She is involved in the trimming, removal, and planting of trees on City property, and is also responsible for maintaining the City's tree inventory. The Urban Forestry Specialist spends a lot of time inspecting the health of trees in the city's parks and right-of-way areas, and is the City Liaison for the Prairie Village Tree Board. Bridget is a ISA certified arborist.

The Emerald Ash Borer was first discovered in the U.S. in 2002 in S.E. Michigan. It was discovered in the summer of 2012 in both Missouri (Parkville) and Kansas (Wyandotte County). On July 15, 2013 the 1st identification of EAB in Johnson County was confirmed by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. https://www.pvkansas.com/Home/Components/News/News/755/601?navid=564
Prairie Village Public Works (PVPW) started tracking EAB before it arrived here and put together a program to treat and/or remove the approximate 700 Ash trees located on city owned islands, parks and street right of way (ROW) in the summer of 2014. 100 city property Ash trees were removed in the Fall of 2014 and replaced with new trees that were a diversity of species to avoid the monoculture of having one tree species (Ash) all in the same place. As of early 2022, PVPW has removed 443 Ash trees in our Parks, Islands, and Rights of Way (ROW), and replaced them with new diverse trees. https://shawneemissionpost.com/2014/08/28/prairie-village-emerald-ash-borer-plans-ahead-tree-removals-coming-soon-30881/
From Bridget Tolle, Prairie Villages's Urban Forestry Specialist: “When planting new trees, it is crucial to plant a diversity of species. If we are planting Sugar Maples everywhere, then it is likely that we could run into a problem in the future similar to EAB. This could result in having to remove a lot of trees due to a disease or pest. A diversity of tree species allows for a resilient urban forest.”
The 1st case of EAB in Prairie Village was confirmed in March, 2015. https://shawneemissionpost.com/2015/04/07/emerald-ash-borer-confirmed-38141
The City of Prairie Village is currently treating 50 Ash trees on City ROW property with trunk injections of Emamectin benzoate on even numbered years (2016, 2018, 2020, 2022) See following for EAB maps in PV: https://www.pvkansas.com/residents/emerald-ash-borer/latest-special-street-eab-maps.
