History

Founded in 1983 as the Prairie Village Park Foundation, the primary purpose of the Foundation was to fund the maintenance of Prairie Village Parks and to offer community members a way to make donations to the parks as a living memorial of their loved ones.
 
In 1986, the scope of the Foundation was broadened to include contributions to the arts, gifts to residents in need of financial assistance, recreational scholarships for qualified families, and community events.
 
Through generous donations, the Prairie Village Foundation has been able to enhance the lives of Prairie Village residents and the surrounding community.

Thursday, December 5, 2024 

6 p.m. Corinth Square

Join Mayor Eric Mikkelson, Santa Claus, and your friends and neighbors for the 39th annual Holiday Tree Lighting on Thursday, December 5th at Corinth Square. The event will kick off at 6 p.m. with performances from Dancerz Unlimited, a local school choir, the Shawnee Mission East Drumline and more. Holiday treat and hot chocolate will be served.  

The Mayor’s Holiday Tree is illuminated each year to serve as a reminder of our Prairie Village community members in need. Money raised for the Mayor's Holiday Tree Fund helps deserving and qualified Prairie Village residents with utility assistance, home maintenance, food assistance, and other vital needs of the community. The City works with Johnson County Human Services and other local charities to pinpoint specific necessities.

Each year, the Prairie Village Foundation hosts the annual Gingerbread House Decorating Party to raise money for summer recreation scholarships for qualified Prairie Village families. For questions, please contact mbuum@pvkansas.com.

“Shop with a PV Cop” is a chance for the Prairie Village Police Department to team up with deserving elementary school children in our community. Eligible children are identified by school counselors, principals, and the Police Department D.A.R.E. officer. Officers treat the children to holiday gifts for both themselves and family members. After shopping, each child has dinner at the police station while their packages are wrapped.

Also, don’t forget to drop off your old cell phone at the Police Station, 7710 Mission Road. The Police Department collects phones to help support the Shop with a PV Cop program. A cell phone collection box is located in the Police Station lobby. Used phones may be dropped off at any time for recycling. Your old cell phone is our treasure!

As any parent knows, August is an expensive and busy month. Back to school means purchasing new school supplies, lunch boxes, backpacks, clothes, and shoes. Parents also pay PTA dues, yearbook and lunch fees, along with other necessary school expenses. All of these expenses add up quickly.

The Prairie Village Foundation and Consolidated Fire District #2, NE Johnson County team up in early August for "Back to School with a Firefighter." The Prairie Village Foundation works with school principals to pinpoint children who might benefit from this program. Children team up with firefighters to purchase their school supplies from the school district requirement list and are then treated to dinner and a tour of a fire station.

The Prairie Village Foundation and Consolidated Fire District #2, NE Johnson County believe it is imperative to provide children with new supplies, with the hope that they will feel empowered and confident on the first day of school.
