Animal Licensing
- Animal Licensing
All cats and dogs, six months of age and older, must be licensed with the City. The licensing process ensures that animals have current rabies vaccinations which must be current in order to obtain an animal license. Each household is permitted to have a maximum of four pets with no more than three of one species (dog or cat). Licenses must be renewed every one, two or three years depending on the license purchased. Rabies vaccinations must be valid for the duration of the license being purchased. If an animal cannot tolerate the rabies vaccination, a letter stating the intolerance must be provided by the vet.

Animals
The Prairie Village Police Department’s Animal Control Unit is comprised of two, full-time Community Service Officers (CSOs). The CSOs are responsible for enforcing the City’s animal control ordinances and assisting residents with animal related issues. All dogs and cats must be licensed each year. If you lose your pet, contact Police Dispatch at 913/642-6868, or Animal Control at 913/385-4631.
Our CSOs work seven days a week, with the following hours during a typical week:
Monday-Tuesday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Wednesday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Thursday-Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Our Community Service Officers are Courtney Sievers and Daniel Parker.
Community Service Officers (CSOs) are responsible for enforcing the City's animal control ordinances. The officers normally work seven days per week responding to citizen requests and patrolling the City to identify stray animals or animals violating the City's leash law. One of their goals is to assist residents with animal related issues, as well as providing guidance on being responsible pet owners.
Leash Law
The City's Leash Law requires dogs to be confined to the property of their owner/keeper, except when taken off the premises on a leash, in a cage, or in a car. Cats must be under the control of their owner/keeper. Cats which cause injury or damage to property shall be presumed not to be under the control of their owner/keeper. Dogs will be picked up when observed or reported running loose.
Please contact Police Dispatch at 913/642-6868 to report unconfined animals.
Barking Dogs
Any animal that barks, whines, howls or creates any other disturbance which is continuous or untimely is considered a public nuisance. It is unlawful for the owner of any animal to permit such animal to become a public nuisance. Contact Police Dispatch at 913/642-6868 to report a barking dog. The Police Department will investigate the complaint.
Stray or Feral Cats
The Prairie Village Police Department responds to calls involving sick, injured or destructive cats but does not respond on calls related to stray or feral cats.
The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) defines a stray cat as one that is domesticated but has become lost or abandoned and a feral cat as one that is wild-raised. ASPCA studies say that only 2% of cats taken to the shelter are ever reclaimed but 67% of cats left alone in the community return to their home on their own. Feral cats are non adoptable once captured and placed in shelters. They exhibit wild, shy or frightened behavior that is very difficult to domesticate. According to the ASPCA, feral cats make up a large percentage of euthanized cats every year.
The Prairie Village Police Department asks that residents not feed, water, or harbor loose cats. Stray cats will likely return to their proper home and feral cats are wild animals that can fend for themselves.

Lost Animals
Most lost pets are found within 1 mile of home. If you lose your pet, please follow the next series of steps:
- Notify Animal Control at 913/385-4631;
- Notify Police Dispatch at 913/642-5151;
- Notify surrounding cities because your pet may cross city boundaries:
- City of Leawood - 913/642-5555
- Northeast Johnson County - 913/782-0720
- Overland Park - 913/895-6300
- Kansas City, MO - 816/513-1313
- If your pet is microchipped, contact the microchip company to ensure all of your information is current (i.e. address & phone numbers)
- Make a post on social media via Facebook group Lost and Found Pets of Johnson County Kansas;
- Make a post on the Nextdoor App (its free to join, or a neighbor can post for you as well);
- Make a free post with Paw Boost Alerts https://www.pawboost.com/
- Visit Animal Shelters & vet clinics in person to look for your pet. There is always the possibility that another person's description of your pet will vary from your own. Find out how long the agency holds pets for owners to claim (varies from 3 to 10 days) and visit at least that often; and
- Make flyers with a current photo to distribute to grocery or pet stores, and surrounding neighbors.
When Animal Control finds a lost pet, they make every attempt to return the pet to its owner. Help us increase the opportunity to protect and return your pet to you by keeping a collar on your pet with current ID tags (rabies tag, City license tag, and/or personal ID tag) on display.
If an owner cannot be contacted, the pet is taken to Great Plains SPCA. Call Animal Control / Police Dispatch at 913/642-5151 to find out if we have picked up your pet.
Great Plains SPCA Admissions is open Monday - Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To reclaim your pet, a valid photo ID is required AS WELL AS proof of ownership. Great Plains SPCA Admissions and Lost Pet Center is located at: 5428 Antioch Drive, Merriam, Kansas 66202 - 913/808-3347 - email: intake@greatplansspca.org.
After hours, the Department does have a microchip scanner and will scan for a chip to attempt to locate the owner.

Found Animals
1. Look for tags. Rabies tags are issued by veterinarians who keep owner information. City license tags are issued by cities that also keep owner information. Look at the collar. Owners will sometimes write contact information on the collar with marker. There could be some form of tagless identification engraved on the collar buckle or there could be an ID plate across the collar band with owner information.
2. Call Dispatch at 913/642-5151. They will check to see if the pet has been reported missing, take a description of the pet, and your contact information in case the owner calls looking for the lost pet. They can also look up the city tag to find the owner information.
3. Take the pet to a vet or shelter and ask them to scan him/her for a microchip (which can provide owner information).
4. If you cannot care for the pet and need to release him/her, be sure to contact the Animal Control department for the city in which the pet was found. This gives the owner the best chance of reuniting with their pet. If the pet was found in Prairie Village, please let Dispatch know so that Animal Control can be sent to your location to retrieve the pet.
