The Capital Improvement Program is responsible for construction projects involving City facilities. The Program strives to maintain the City's infrastructure and to rebuild, expand or construct new infrastructure facilities when necessary. Future CIP work can be found in the City budget on the finance page

These projects are administered by the City. However, the work is performed by outside contractors. All construction work is inspected to ensure compliance with City specifications. Information on the current and upcoming projects can be found on the City's  project page.  Check it out to see what is happening.

Citizen Notification of Public Improvement Projects

The City of Prairie Village prides itself on keeping citizens informed. The following is a brief synopsis of the notification process for property owners directly affected by City construction projects:

Street Work, Storm Drainage and Concrete Repair Projects
• Notified via letter 2 weeks prior to construction beginning on the street.
• Notified via door-hanger/yard signage 48 hours prior to any work on the property.

Micro Surface Projects
• Notified via door-hanger/yard signage 48 hours prior.

Crack Seal Projects
• Notified via door-hanger/yard signage 24 hours prior.

Street Maintenance and Repair

The City's program emphasizes the prevention of road surface deterioration by filling cracks and sealing streets. As the road surface deteriorates, the surface is milled and replaced with new asphalt. When necessary, entire streets are reconstructed.

The Public Works Department maintains an inventory of all of the City's infrastructure and its condition. Each year, 20-25% of the infrastructure is rated as to its condition. These inventories and condition ratings are utilized to determine what repairs should be made.

Storm Drainage

Like streets, the City also maintains a storm drainage system of inlets, pipes and channels. The drainage program is primarily for the repair/replacement of the existing system. On a specific case basis, new projects will be constructed after analysis of costs and benefits.

Concrete Repairs

Typical activities are repair of broken concrete in the City sidewalk and curb/gutter system. Maintenance on sidewalks includes grinding high spots less than one inch and temporary patches. In some cases small sections of curb/gutters may be temporary patched. Both sidewalks and curbs/gutters are replaced as part of an annual construction contract.

Prairie Village Citizens' "Bill of Rights" for Public Improvement Projects

Here are your rights when public improvement work is done on your street.

  1. You have the same rights and privileges as your neighbors. All residents will be treated equitably. No preferential treatment will be given to any resident for any reason.
  2. You have the right to have the work performed on your street in a timely, professional manner.
  3. You have the right to have your concerns addressed promptly. The City will address your concerns within 2 work days from the time you contact one of the project representatives. If a problem cannot be immediately taken care of, then the course of action to address your concern will be formulated within that time.
  4. You have the right to live your life in a reasonably normal fashion during construction. The workers are professional, skilled craftspeople who perform their job in a difficult environment. They understand the inconveniences caused by construction and will try to minimize them. Any worker who does not act in a professional manner may be barred from the site by the City.
  5. You have the right to have notice prior to work commencing on your street, having your drive apron removed, and to when new sod in front of your house will become your responsibility. The first notice will be sent out 2 weeks prior to the work commencing.
