UPDATE October 18, 2024 The play area is complete and new surfacing has been placed through the play areas. In the coming weeks we will also be installing new benches throughout the park.  Taliaferro has been the site of construction for a while now and we thank you for your patience while we make these improvements!

October 2, 2024 The individual play elements are being installed. The project will be ready for the new rubber surfacing late this week.  The surfacing has to cure for a few days prior to "traffic" so we will have to keep the orange fence up until middle of next week.

The City of Prairie Village has received grant funds from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) to purchase playground surfacing that will connect sidewalks to the new individual play equipment at Taliaferro Park this fall. Playground surfacing will be installed in the area shown in blue below to provide connectivity for play items and sidewalks.

KDHE’s Waste Tire Grant Program supports projects with local governments and schools in Kansas that incorporate waste tires. Eligible projects include those where waste-tire-derived products are used and must be composed of multiple materials no less than 50% waste tire material, unless composed of other recycled material.  One of the uses for waste tires in a park setting is poured-in-place surfacing, which allows for a hard surface to access various elements of the play equipment.  This surfacing will replace engineered wood fiber at the park, exceeding minimum ADA requirements for play surfacing.

In addition to the individual play elements, the 2-5 year old area is getting some new play pieces including playhouses, new spring toys and some individual spinners.  This new play area is great for generating imagination play for the little ones.

The project is now scheduled to begin in early September (previously the contractor had indicated a mid-August start).  It includes the removal of the existing individual play pieces, installation of the "little village" with slide and new inclusive individual play with the final step being the poured-in-place surfacing.
