Construction Updates
April 22, 2024 – The contractor will be replacing some panels of sidewalk and curb along Mission Road starting this week. The roadway will remain open during the work. Some areas of sidewalk will be temporarily closed while the work occurs.
March 29, 2024 – Landscape restoration and sod has occurred. Landscaping along Brush Creek and on traffic islands will continue this spring. Park benches and trash cans will be installed this spring when they become available.
The project will require a one-day roadway closure in April when permanent pavement markings are installed on the roadways and crosswalks. This will be the final roadway closure for this project.
February 21, 2024 – Sidewalk installation is complete. The sidewalk on the east side of Mission Road will remain closed until handrail installations are completed. Brush Creek restoration has begun, and some landscape items will begin shortly. Remaining restoration items will be completed in the spring. Reconstruction of residential fences have started.
The project may require daily work closures again on Mission Road while sod operations occur. Partial and/or daily closures should be expected. The roadway will remain open on evening, weekends, and when work is not occurring. It is not anticipated that many more road closures are required based on the work remaining.

November 27, 2023 - The project will transition to daily work closures on Mission Road starting December 1st. Daily closures will allow for remaining construction activities to be completed. Partial and/or daily closures should be expected as work will continue into next year to complete the project.
Sidewalk construction, yard grading, and Brush Creek restoration will occur during the next month.
Some landscape restoration items will occur this fall as weather allows. Remaining restoration items will be completed next spring.
November 15, 2023 - The contractor is working on completing retaining walls along Brush Creek this week. Residential driveways have been completed. Sidewalk construction on the west side of Mission Road will occur over the next month.
Final roadway asphalt is planned to occur in the next week. This will allow for transition to daily work closures on Mission Road in December. Daily closures will allow for remaining construction activities to be completed. Partial and/or daily closures should be expected as work will continue into next year to complete the project.
Brush Creek vegetation restoration will occur in December. Other landscape restoration items will occur this fall as weather allows. Remaining restoration items will be completed next spring.
WaterOne is finalizing new water main connections.
November 1, 2023- Curbs and base asphalt have been placed on Mission Road. The contractor is now working on retaining walls along Brush Creek. The retaining wall work requires the staging of materials and equipment on Mission Road. Residential driveway and sidewalk construction on the west side of Mission Road will also occur throughout November.
WaterOne will be onsite finalizing new water main connections and relocations in early November.
The contractor is working as weather allows to complete the current work phase to make way for traffic to start using Mission Road again before winter. Final asphalt surface is dependent on appropriate weather conditions to allow for paving operations to occur. The contractor is working to allow traffic on Mission Road to be restored by the end of November. Partial and/or daily closures should be expected as work will continue into next year to complete the project.
October 12, 2023 – Roadway fill operations have been completed. Roadway pavement reconstruction has started on Mission Road. The first course of pavement will be placed this week with concrete curbs following shortly after. If weather allows, the contractor is working to have Mission Road partially open to traffic by mid-November. Until then Mission Road north of Tomahawk Road to 67th street will remain closed.
Village Presbyterian’s south parking lot remains accessible, but access will be limited at times.

Work will continue in the area until winter. Restoration and items not completed will be completed in the spring of 2024.
September 27, 2023 - Storm sewer construction along Mission Road between 68th Terrace and 67th Terrace is nearing completion. Johnson County Wastewater improvements have been substantially completed.
Existing pavement and curbs are being removed starting this week on Mission Road and on side streets. Temporary driveway access will be provided for driveways impacted by removals. New roadway fill and construction will be starting next.
Mission Road north of Tomahawk Road to 67th street will remain closed. Village Presbyterian’s south parking lot remains accessible, but access will be limited with future work phases.

September 13, 2023 - Tomahawk Road intersection reopened August 31st. Storm sewer construction along Mission Road between 68th Terrace and 67th Terrace will continue for a few weeks. Johnson County Wastewater improvements have been substantially completed.

August 28, 2023 - Tomahawk Road intersection is receiving final asphalt pavement and traffic markings this week. The intersection is anticipated to open mid-week.
Mission Road pavement removal north of Tomahawk Road to 67th Terrace will occur starting in the coming weeks. This section of Mission Road will remain closed. Please follow posted detours.
August 17, 2023 - The road closure of the intersection at Tomahawk Road continues and allows the completion of Johnson County Wastewater sewer upgrade portion of the project. Late night work may occur to allow for the sewer changes to be completed. The intersection closure is anticipated to last one month.
AT&T is currently repairing a fiber duct bank across Tomahawk as an emergency repair. The work will occur within the existing road closure. One pavement repair area will be required on Mission Lane near the UMB bank site.
WaterOne is completing water main upgrades at 67th Street and Mission Road. They will be repairing sidewalk ramps at 67th Street the week of August 21st.
Mission Road pavement removal north of Tomahawk Road to 67th Terrace will occur starting in the coming weeks.
August 3, 2023- The intersection of Tomahawk Road and Mission Road is scheduled to close August 8th. The intersection closure is scheduled to remain in place for one month. Posted detour routes using Roe Avenue should be used. Do not use neighborhood streets as a cut through. PV shops will have all entrances open with the Mission Lane and Tomahawk entrance having limited access at times. This closure will allow the completion of Johnson County Wastewater sewer upgrade portion of the project.
WaterOne is completing water main upgrades at 67th Street and Mission Road. They will be repairing sidewalk ramps at 67th Street in the next week.
June 28, 2023- Mission Road is fully closed between 67th Street and Tomahawk Road. This closure will last throughout the summer into fall. Detours will be posted. Traffic patterns are being monitored and adjusted to limit detour traffic through residential areas.
Vegetation removal, including tree removals, to allow for construction of the improvements will continue for approximately two weeks. Replacement trees and vegetation are planned as part of the project. Those plantings have been designed to be more appropriate for the park and channel setting of this corridor compared to existing site conditions.
The Johnson County Wastewater sewer upgrade portion of the work is scheduled to begin July 5th.
Utilities continue to relocate facilities in the area. Schliffke Park is closed for use and parking. Shaffer Park will be limited during on-going work.

Project Overview
The City hired an engineering firm to study the area of 68th Street and Mission Road after flooding of the roadway and adjacent properties in 2017. The study evaluated possible solutions for the roadway and property flooding and allowed the project to receive stormwater funding from Johnson County’s stormwater management (SMAC) program.
The project includes raising and rebuilding Mission Road between Tomahawk Road and 67th street. It also includes work within the Brush Creek corridor to improve channel flow.
The project has received funding and is Public Works is working on detailed design to allow for construction of the improvements in the summer of 2023.
Project Updates
May 2023- The project was bid in May and a construction contract was awarded to VF Anderson Builders LLC on May 15, 2023.
Construction is expected to begin in early summer. Notifications will be provided before construction begins. Equipment and materials may be staged near the project prior to work beginning. Vegetation removal, including tree removals, to allow for construction of the improvements will be part of the initial work from the contractor. Replacement trees and vegetation are planned as part of the project. Those plantings have been designed to be more appropriate for the park and channel setting of this corridor compared to what exists today.
Mission Road will be closed between Tomahawk Road and 67th Street during the summer and likely into early fall.
Utility relocations will continue through early summer and may impact traffic and sidewalks on an intermittent basis. The parking lot at Schliffke Park will remaining closed while utilities continue relocations.
March 2023 – Final plans are being completed to allow for a spring bidding for construction. Staff is currently working with residents to acquire easements necessary for construction of the project. Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) is also working with residents to complete easements required for their sanitary sewer upgrades that will be constructed at the same time as the Mission Road work.
Utilities will begin facility relocations beginning in April. This may impact traffic on an intermittent basis and will require the closure of the Schliffke Park parking lot area during the work.
Construction is expected to begin in early summer once a contractor is selected through the bidding process. Notifications will be provided when construction begins. Mission Road will be closed between Tomahawk Road and 67th Street during the summer.
A project update was provided to the City Council on March 6, 2023.
October 18, 2022 – A public meeting was be held October 18th at Prairie Village Public Works between 4:30 & 6:30 pm. City staff, the design engineers, and Johnson County Wastewater was available to discuss the project. Here is the rendering from the meeting that depicts the changes along Mission Road and to Schliffke Park.
2022 – Preliminary design is being finished this summer. The public involvement process will occur this fall for residents and stakeholder to review the project provide feedback.
A project update was provided to the City Council September 6th. The construction schedule has been revised for construction in 2023 with the anticipation that the Mission Road closure could occur in the summer of 2023.
2021 – The project received SMAC funds and City selected Affinis Corp to complete the engineering design for this project. Land survey and preliminary engineering design began. Hydraulic engineering, utility coordination, and permitting have been a focus of the early design phase. The design team is also working with Johnson County Wastewater to determine sewer upgrades that can be implemented at the same time as this project
2018 - The Preliminary Engineering Study (PES) was presented to the city council. Approval to submit the PES to the County for potential funding was requested. The project competed with other projects submitted in Johnson County. The earliest the project could be funded was 2020. The SMAC program would potentially fund 50% of the final design, construction, and construction inspection.
A public meeting was held on October 9, 2018 as an opportunity to share the solutions and receive feedback from residents . Attached below are the exhibits for the meeting.
