The Prairie Village Police Department Summer Internship Program is designed to allow college students an opportunity to observe Department operations, learn more about the law enforcement environment and be mentored by trained professionals. In addition, summer interns will learn about and participate in various Department functions.
The summer internship is up to a 40-hour work week that runs from mid May through mid August. Summer intern positions pay is $15 per hour.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
Eligible summer intern candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years old;
- Have a high school diploma, GED, or evidence of equivalent achievement;
- Successfully pass a Department-administered CVSA (computer stress voice analyzer) exam;
- Pass an in-depth background investigation, and
- Pass a City-coordinated drug screen after a conditional offer of an internship is extended.
Past Criminal Activity
Eligible summer intern candidates must NOT:
- Have been convicted, or have had a conviction expunged, diverted, or deferred for any Federal or State felony crime or misdemeanor domestic violence crime convictions;
- Had recent use of any illegal drugs;
- Have an established pattern of prescription medication abuse;
- Currently be charged with or under indictment for any criminal activity other than minor traffic violations, and
- Currently be on criminal probation.
The following activities may not automatically disqualify an applicant for employment, but will be closely scrutinized on a case-by-case basis:
- Commission of any other potential felonious acts not listed above, detected or undetected.
Driving Record
Eligible summer intern candidates:
- Must possess a valid driver's license and an insurable driving record prior to beginning employment with the City, and
- May not have been convicted of, plead guilt or no contest to, or been diverted on a serious traffic violation, including DUI, reckless driving, hit and run, vehicular homicide, transporting an open container of alcoholic liquor or cereal malt beverage, eluding a police officer, and negligent homicide, within the past three years.
