Besides offering competitive wages and a great working environment, the City of Prairie Village offers a wide range of benefits to employees and their families. Below is a brief summary of benefits offered to City employees.

Paid Leave Benefits

Full-Time Employees

Vacation

Employees begin earning paid vacation time upon date of hire. Paid Vacation Time is accrued on a per-pay period basis, resulting in the following annual vacation benefit based on years of service:

0 - 5 years of service: 11 days
6 - 10 years of service: 15 days
11 - 15 years of service: 20 days
16 - 20 years of service: 23 days 
21+ years of service: 25 days 

 

Sick Leave

Employees begin earning paid sick leave upon date of hire. A trial or regular employee earns and accrues 3.39 hours of sick leave on a bi-weekly basis to a maximum of 11 days per calendar year. Sick leave with pay may be accumulated to a maximum of ninety four (94) days.

Paid Holidays

The City recognizes the following paid holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • President's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veteran's Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • The Friday following Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Eve (half day)
  • Christmas Day
  • One (1) Floating Holiday

Paid Parental Leave

Regular full-time employees are provided with paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child and are eligible from their first day of employment with the City of Prairie Village, In order to receive paid parental leave, employees must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Have given birth to a child.
  2. Be the spouse or domestic partner of someone who has given birth to a child.
  3. Be listed as a parent on the child’s official birth certificate.
  4. Have adopted a child.

Military Leave

A military leave of absence will be granted to an employee to serve in the uniformed services of the United States in accordance with applicable law.  Persons who perform and return from military service will retain certain rights with respect to reinstatement, seniority, layoffs, compensation and other benefits, as provided by applicable law.  Military leave pay will be granted to employees during a military leave of absence to make the employee whole. Military leave pay will be limited to the amount of wages, when added to military wages, that would allow the employee to earn the same rate of pay if they were not on military leave.  

Part-Time, Seasonal and Temporary Employees

Part-Time, Seasonal and Temporary employees are not eligible for leave benefits or leave accruals.

Insurance Benefits

Health Insurance

All full-time employees must enroll in a basic Health Insurance Plan for employee only coverage. The City pays 100% of the full monthly premium for individuals and contributes substantially toward Employee +1 and Family (Employee + 2 or more) coverage.

Dental Insurance

All full-time employees and their dependents may enroll in a dental insurance program. The City pays for 100% of the employee's dental insurance premium.

Vision Insurance

All full-time employees and their dependents may enroll in a vision insurance program. The City pays for 100% of the employee's vision insurance premium.

Life Insurance

The following Life Insurance coverages are provided:

  • The City provides $10,000 of life insurance to all full-time, non-commissioned employees.
  • The City provides a Life Insurance under a Commissioned Police Officer Plan of five (5) times annual salary up to a maximum of $350,000 to Commissioned employees.
  • City employees participating in the KPERS program have an additional life insurance coverage at 150% of their annual rate of compensation.
  • Employees may purchase additional Life Insurance coverage for their dependents at their own expense through the City-sponsored plan.
  • Full-time, non-commissioned employees may be able to purchase, at their expense, additional Life Insurance coverage through KPERS.

Long-Term Disability Insurance

The City pays the insurance costs for a basic long-term disability plan for each full-time employee. City employees are eligible for long-term disability benefits on the first of the month following 30 continuous days of employment. These benefits become available after 90 days of total disability within a 180 day period.

Workers' Compensation Insurance

Employees injured on the job are covered by the Kansas Workers' Compensation Act. Earned sick leave and vacation time can be used to supplement workers compensation payments not to exceed the employee's normal salary.

Retirement Benefits

Deferred Compensation/457 Plan

The City offers a deferred compensation/457 plan through Voya. All full-time employees may elect to participate in this plan which allows them to invest a portion of current income for retirement under a planned program and allows them to defer payment of current income taxes in those contributions until the money is received as a retirement benefit. This plan allows employees to choose from a wide range of investment options.

KPERS Retirement Plan

Eligible employees are enrolled in the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS) after completing one year of service. Each employee participating in the plan contributes 6% of his/her total salary. This amount is withheld from every payment to the employee for salary/wages. The City contributes to KPERS a percent of the wages paid to eligible employees, the amount of City contribution is calculated by the KPERS Board.

Supplemental Pension Plan

All full time employees are also enrolled in the City's Supplemental Pension Plan. The City contributes a defined percentage of gross wages per payroll based on the employees contribution to their 457 plan.

Police Pension Plan

The City of Prairie Village offers a defined benefit pension plan for commissioned police officers. Under the plan, the officer contributes 4% of his/her base salary annually. The City's contribution may vary based on the actuary's calculations.

The plan allows officers to accumulate a pension benefit of 2 ½% of the officer's final salary for each year of service. A member may retire after 20 years of service at 50% of his/her salary. Service points are capped at 25 years, resulting in a maximum benefit of 62 1/2% of base salary after 25 years of service. Members of the plan are fully vested after 15 years of service, with partial vesting beginning after five years of service.

Other Benefit Programs

Time In Service Awards

All regular full-time employees are eligible for a Time-In-Service (TIS) Award on the third (3rd) anniversary of their employment date and every three (3) years thereafter. Time-In-Service awards will be paid on the first paycheck of the month following the employee’s anniversary date of hire. 

The Time-In-Service award will equate to 5% of the employee’s base rate of pay as of their anniversary date and will be in the form of a lump sum payment.  This payment will not become part of the base salary. 

Educational Expense Reimbursement

The City encourages employees to take advantage of educational courses which will improve job performance and prepare employees for promotional opportunities. After one year of full-time employment and with the prior approval of the employee's Manager and the Mayor, the City may pay up to fifty percent (50%) of eligible educational expenses subject to the IRS non-taxable limit for accountable plans.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The City of Prairie Village provides an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through LiveWorks which provides confidential professional consultation and short-term counseling for employees and their family members at no charge. The program is designed to assist employees with personal issues and/or workplace issues.  Services are available to family members who reside with the employee.

Flexible Benefits Plan (Section 125 Cafeteria Plan)

The City has established a Flexible Benefit Plan under Section 125 of the IRS code which allows eligible employees to pay their monthly premiums for medical and dental insurance on a pre-tax basis. This IRS Code also allows employees to contribute pre-tax dollars for un-reimbursed medical expenses and dependent care expenses. All regular employees are eligible to participate in the program.

Pool Memberships

All regular full-time and part-time employees, their spouses, and children living in the same home with the employee will be provided with a Prairie Village Pool membership at no charge.

On-Site Fitness Facility

The City offers employees the ability to use an on-site facility with equipment for cardiovascular and weight lifting free of charge.
