Prairie Village officers working in our K-9 Unit, patrol, in our schools as SROs (school resource officers), and in traffic all wear body-worn cameras.

Cameras can capture audio and video any time the camera is powered on. The cameras are also capable of activating automatically when an officer’s patrol car’s lights and sirens are activated, decreasing the number of steps required for documentation in an emergency.

Video recordings are kept for various lengths of time depending on the classification of the recording. Equipment checks, traffic stops, and day-to-day patrol operations are kept for 30 days. Video of incidents not involving arrests, complaints, evidence, use of force, and other incidents are purged from the server in accordance with the Department's Retention Schedule.

Body camera and vehicle dash camera footage may be disclosed in accordance with Kansas State Statute 45-254.
