Animal Licensing

Animal Licensing

All cats and dogs, six months of age and older, must be licensed with the City. The licensing process ensures that animals have current rabies vaccinations which must be current in order to obtain an animal license. Each household is permitted to have a maximum of four pets with no more than three of one species (dog or cat). Licenses must be renewed every one, two or three years depending on the license purchased. Rabies vaccinations must be valid for the duration of the license being purchased. If an animal cannot tolerate the rabies vaccination, a letter stating the intolerance must be provided by the vet.

It is unlawful in the City of Prairie Village to discriminate against individuals in employment, housing, and public accommodations based on sexual orientation or gender identity. If you believe you have been discriminated against, you may file a claim with the City Clerk’s office using this claim form. All discrimination claims must be filed with the City within 60 days of the last act of discrimination.

Welcome to the Prairie Village Police Department’s home page. The Police Department is comprised of 47 sworn officers and 13 civilian employees who provide 24-hour law enforcement services for the communities of Prairie Village and Mission Hills. We take great pride in serving our citizens and value the partnerships we have developed with our residents and business owners. Our Staff understands the importance of maintaining high standards and professionalism, and we strive to live up to our Department motto, “A Tradition of Service,” every day.

Hire an Off-Duty Officer

Off-duty officers are available for hire to provide security and/or traffic control for your event. The rate is $62.61 an hour, with a three-hour minimum required. Officers are dressed in full uniform and will arrive in a police unit so you have a visible presence of law enforcement. For further information or to request one or more off-duty officers to work your event, please email Sgt. Josh Putthoff or call 913/385-4620.

Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)

The Prairie Village Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) is a high-visible, non-confrontational volunteer group formed to help reduce and prevent crime in the City of Prairie Village.

The primary task of the VIPS will be to provide crime deterrence through high-visibility patrols, report on in-progress crimes, document suspicious persons or activities and/or unsafe conditions within an assigned patrol area. VIPS members will provide operational assistance to on-duty Department members. VIPS members should keep in mind the inherent liability placed upon the City of Prairie Village whenever on duty. By wearing the uniform and patrolling, members represent the Prairie Village Police Department.

One of the requirements to become a volunteer is to complete the Department's Citizens Academy. Once this is completed, you may contact Sgt. Josh Putthoff to inquire about future openings.
