Arbor Day Event

  • Date: 04/29/2023 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

You’re invited to the City of Prairie Village Arbor Day Event on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in Porter Park - 4601 Tomahawk Rd, presented by the Prairie Village Tree Board.

On January 4, 1872, J. Sterling Morton first proposed a tree-planting holiday to be called “Arbor Day” at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture.  The date was set for April 10, 1872.  Prizes were offered to counties and individuals for properly planting the largest number of trees on that day.  It was estimated that more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day.

Join the Prairie Village Tree Board in celebrating Arbor Day by planting a tree in honor of the Prairie Elementary Green Team. The Prairie Elementary Green Team started in response to children’s concerns about the sustainability of our planet. Their positive contributions to our community include promoting Idle-Free Zones, organizing Walking Wednesdays, cleaned up trash during weekend workdays, performed a walkability audit, convinced the PTA to choose alternatives to disposable plastic water bottles for school events, advocated for reducing plastic waste in the school cafeteria, taught other students how to recycle properly, mulched trees in our city’s parks, and are hosting a “bake/make sale” to raise money to purchase additional trees for school property.
