Project Overview
There is a long history to this project dating back to the 1998 floods. The attached City Council memo explains the history and this memo set the current direction of the project. Council voted to move forward with the design of the improvement project.

Updates
July 10- This project is complete and Public Works Staff thanks the residents on the corridor their patience during the construction and restoration of the channel!
January 31, 2020 - Work continues on the open channel and bridge crossing portions of the project as winter weather allows. The project is still scheduled to complete by late spring 2020.
November 22, 2019 - Work continues in the open channel portion of the project between Delmar and Fontana. The Delmar bridge has been placed and the Fontana bridge should be set in early December. Delmar and Fontana will remain closed to local traffic. Grading and restoration will occur as weather allows this winter.
The project is scheduled to be complete by late spring 2020.
October 22, 2019 – Somerset Drive will reopen to traffic this week. There may be periodic daily closures as project and utility work continue. Delmar and Fontana will remain closed. Sod restoration will occur in some areas as weather allows.
October 7, 2019 - Somerset Drive is scheduled to be opened to traffic in mid-October. Construction will continue in the area through fall. Delmar Lane and Fontana Street are expected to open by late November.
August 5, 2019 - Somerset Drive between 83rd Street and Roe Avenue is closed until October to allow for underground construction. Local traffic will still have access to driveways. Detour routes are posted.
July 15, 2019 - Construction is progressing according to schedule. Sanitary sewer upgrades along the channel are being constructed at this time. Underground culvert construction east of Somerset Drive will begin in late July. Somerset Drive between 83rd Street and Roe Avenue will close for 60 days starting in early August to allow for underground construction. Local traffic will still have access to driveways.
WaterOne continues to have periodic closures to southbound Somerset Drive as they complete waterline upgrades in the area.
June 6, 2019 - Tree removal and clearing continues. Sanitary sewer construction will begin mid-June. Delmar and Fontana are now closed to thru traffic.
April 30, 2019 - Contractor is scheduled to be on site in Mid-May to begin survey and preliminary clearing activities. Residents along the project will be notified prior to construction.
A public meeting will be held on May 9th from 4:30 – 6:30pm in the multi-purpose room at City Hall. It will be an open house format. Information will be available on timelines, impacts, and road closures.
April 30, 2019 - Contractor is scheduled to be on site in Mid May to begin survey and preliminary activities. Residents will be notified prior to construction.
April 1, 2019 – Contractors are currently bidding on the project. A contractor should be on board and ready to begin in May. Construction is expected to last through November 2019. A more detailed schedule with be available after a contractor is selected and residents will be notified before construction begins on their property.
December 17, 2018 - Easement documents will be going out in the mail this month. A letter will be included in the mailing that explains the process for signing easements. to The city will be working on acquiring all the easements in January. You may see utility companies in your neighborhood this winter adjusting their facilities for this project.
October 10 - The City has completed preliminary plans for this project. Staff has been coordinating individually with residents adjacent to the channel improvements. A public meeting will be held October 24 in the Multi-purpose room at City Hall as an opportunity to share the design with the neighborhood and receive feedback from residents. Please come anytime between 4:30 & 6:30 p.m. as there will not be a formal presentation. City staff and the engineers will be available to discuss the project.
August 9 – Preliminary design continues for this project. Coordination has also begun with utility companies to plan utility relocation that may be required as part of the improvements.
Individual resident meetings will begin in September to review the preliminary design with property owners adjacent to the improvements. After individual property meetings occur, a public meeting will be held to review the project and schedule.
Construction is currently planned to occur in 2019.
March 29 - Progress is being made and most of the field surveying is complete. Utilities have been located and surveyed. During the week of April 1, 2018, four locations will have soil borings taken to determine sub surface information. View the Soil Boring Location Map here (PDF). Once that is complete all the utility flags can be removed from properties.
We are now starting the detailed design based on Option 3 of the Preliminary Engineering Study. As we develop the design we may have meetings with individual properties along the way. Once preliminary design is complete we will have a resident meeting.
